Changeover Time Matrix

The Changeover Time Matrix enables manufacturers to define transition times between different production items or planning characteristic values on the same production line. This is essential for optimizing sequencing logic, minimizing setup delays, and improving scheduling accuracy.

This matrix works in conjunction with Factory Planning to calculate downtime when switching between items or batches with different characteristics, such as allergens, temperatures, or labels.

The matrix supports changeovers by Item or by Planning Characteristic and is line-specific and location-aware.

Setup

When viewing the Changeover Time Matrix, the following filters are available:

Filter Description
Production Line No Filter Filters records by selected Production Line.

The Changeover Time Matrix has the following fields available:

Field Description
Production Line No. Specifies the production line for which the changeover applies.
Changeover Type Specifies whether the changeover is between Items or Planning Characteristics.
From Code / To Code Refers to either the Item No. or Planning Characteristic Code based on the selected Changeover Type.
From Value / To Value Defines the values that trigger the changeover logic.
Location Code Indicates where the changeover is performed. Mandatory if Location Mandatory = Yes in Inventory Setup.
Changeover Time Time required for the changeover.
Changeover Time UoM Unit of Measure for the downtime (linked to Capacity Unit of Measure).

To define a changeover scenario:

  1. Go to Changeover Time Matrix.
  2. Select or filter by the appropriate Production Line.
  3. Choose the Changeover Type: either Item or Planning Characteristic.
  4. Define the From and To combinations using the appropriate codes and values.
  5. Set the Changeover Time and its Unit of Measure.
  6. Optionally, set a Location Code (mandatory if required in your system settings).

You can configure transitions for:

  • Same item but with different packaging or customer (e.g., re-labelling).
  • Different allergen types or temperature zones.
You can export the matrix to Excel for bulk edits and re-import changes.

Business Rules

The Changeover Time Matrix enforces the following behavior and validations:

  • Location Requirements:
    • If Location Mandatory is enabled in Inventory Setup and the Location Code is missing, the system will block entry and show an error.
  • Duplicate Entries:
    • The system prevents users from entering duplicate lines with the same combination of Production Line, Changeover Type, From Code/Value, To Code/Value, and Location. Attempting to do so triggers a standard primary key violation.
  • Same-to-Same Transitions:
    • You may define changeovers from an item to itself or a characteristic value to the same value. This supports scenarios like retooling for different packaging or label requirements.
  • Filtering Behavior:
    • When Changeover Type = Item, the From/To fields are filtered to Items of type Inventory where Blocked = False.
    • When Changeover Type = Planning Characteristic, the From/To fields are filtered to available Planning Characteristic Codes and Values configured in the Factory Planning Setup.
  • Excel Export and Edit:
    • The matrix can be exported and edited in Excel using the standard Open in Excel feature. Changes can be published back for fast data entry.
