For proper inventory management, packaging information must be gathered and managed.

Three tiers of packaging are distinguished:

• Packing unit, which is the packaging type containing the product;
• Shipping unit, which is the grouping unit to handle the items;
• Shipment container, which is the packaging type holding the shipping unit;
