Manufacturing Planning Optimization extends several standard Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central pages and introduces new pages dedicated to production scheduling, optimization, planning characteristics, and production line management.
This section provides an overview of the key pages available in MPO and explains their purpose within the planning and optimization process.

Factory Planning Setup
Purpose
The Manufacturing Planning Optimization Setup page contains the default settings used throughout the optimization process.
These settings determine how production orders are retrieved, how planning windows are defined, and how optimization behaves during scheduling activities.
Production Lines
Purpose
Production Lines represent the planning resources used by MPO.
They provide the scheduling engine with information about available production time, preparation requirements, and planning behavior
Planning Characteristics
Purpose
Planning Characteristics allow products to be classified according to production requirements. These classifications are later used by MPO to group and sequence production orders.
Changeover Matrix
Purpose
The Changeover Matrix defines the setup and cleaning times required when moving between products, families, or planning characteristics.
This information is used during scheduling calculations to generate realistic production plans.
Factory Planning
Purpose
Factory Planning is the main operational page of Manufacturing Planning Optimization.
It provides a visual planning workspace where production orders are retrieved, optimized, reviewed, and applied to production schedules.
Item Card
Purpose
The Item Card is extended with Planning Characteristic fields that support production optimization.
Planners can assign classification values that influence scheduling decisions and changeover calculations.
Stockkeeping Unit (SKU)
Purpose
The SKU page also supports Planning Characteristics, allowing organizations to manage optimization rules at location and variant level.
This provides greater flexibility where planning requirements differ between production sites or variants.
