Troubleshooting & FAQs

This section helps users identify and resolve common issues when working with Manufacturing Batch Size. It also provides answers to frequently asked questions to clarify how batch-controlled production behaves in different scenarios.

Common Issues and Solutions

Production Order quantity cannot be edited

Issue: Users are unable to change the quantity on a production order.

Cause: The production order is marked as a Batch Production Order, where quantities are controlled by the defined batch size.

Solution: This is expected behavior. In batch-controlled production orders:

  • Quantities are fixed
  • The order represents a complete batch

To produce a different quantity, adjust the demand or batch size configuration rather than modifying the production order directly.

Multiple production orders are created automatically

Issue: Instead of a single production order, multiple orders are generated.

Cause: The required quantity exceeds the defined batch size.

Solution: The system automatically splits the demand into multiple production orders, each representing one batch. This ensures consistent batch execution. No action is required unless the batch size configuration needs to be reviewed.

Unable to assign a different lot during production posting

Issue: The system blocks posting when a different lot number is used.

Cause: Batch production enforces the one lot per batch rule.

Solution: Ensure that:

  • The same lot is used consistently throughout the production order
  • A new lot is only used for a different production order

This behavior ensures traceability and prevents inconsistencies.

Error when reusing a lot across production orders

Issue: The system prevents using a lot that has already been produced.

Cause: Each lot must represent a unique batch and cannot be reused.

Solution: Create a new lot for each batch production order. This is required to maintain one-to-one traceability between batch and lot.

Component quantities do not match expected values

Issue: Component quantities differ from manually expected amounts.

Cause: Batch-based calculation logic is applied using the Production BOM and Planning Components.

Solution: Verify:

  • Batch Quantity on the Production BOM
  • Quantity per Batch / % Batch Quantity on component lines
  • Use of Fixed Quantity per Batch formula

Remember that quantities are calculated based on full batches and may be rounded up accordingly.

Batch Size Lot field not being populated

Issue: The Batch Size Lot field is not automatically set.

Cause: The required configuration for Lot No. Information creation is missing.

Solution: Ensure that:

  • Create Lot No. Info. on Posting is enabled
  • The item is marked as Batch Size Item

Without this configuration, the system falls back to standard behavior.

Batch structure lost after lot reclassification

Issue: Batch linkage appears inconsistent after inventory movements.

Cause: Partial reclassification or lot splitting may alter batch designation.

Solution:

  • Avoid splitting batch lots where possible
  • Prefer full reclassification when moving inventory

Full reclassification preserves the Batch Size Lot designation and maintains traceability.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Can I produce a quantity that is smaller than the batch size? No. Manufacturing Batch Size enforces production in full batches. If a smaller quantity is required, the system will still generate a full batch to maintain consistency and traceability.

Q: Can I create a production order manually with a different quantity? No. When batch logic is applied, production order quantities are controlled by the batch size and cannot be manually adjusted.

Q: Why are scrap quantities not considered in batch production? Batch production is based on fixed batch definitions. Scrap values are excluded to ensure that batch quantities remain consistent and predictable across all production runs.

Q: Is it possible to split a batch into multiple lots? Technically yes, but it is controlled. The system will prompt for confirmation, and doing so may impact traceability and remove batch designation in certain cases.

Q: Does the app support production planning by batch size? No. The app does not include full planning capabilities. However, Planning Components are enhanced to ensure that calculation results are aligned with batch size logic.

Q: What happens if I disable “Batch Size Item” on an item? The item will no longer follow batch-specific restrictions, and the system will revert to standard Business Central behavior for production and lot tracking.

Q: What happens if Lot No. Information is not configured? Batch-related tracking and controls will not function as expected, and the system will behave according to standard functionality.
