Overview

Introduction

Catchweight Management extends Dynamics 365 Business Central with the ability to manage products whose actual weight varies from unit to unit. These products are typically handled using a standard inventory quantity while simultaneously requiring the registration and tracking of their real physical weight through a parallel unit of measure known as a catchweight.

Catchweight Management integrates with standard Dynamics 365 Business Central processes, allowing actual weight information to be recorded and managed across purchasing, sales, logistics, inventory, and accounting activities.

• Capture the actual weight from a transaction to register proper price, cost, and quantity.
• Ability to capture normative weight on Item.
• Calculate Sales prices and Purchase costs per weight.
• Ability to update Weight and Number of pieces on Inbound and Outbound Flows.
• Register Handling Quantities in addition to Quantity (weight) in all warehouse transactions.

Key Concepts and Definitions

Catchweight Management: In businesses like food where items might fluctuate significantly in weight, size, or both, Catchweight Items are frequently used. Catchweight items will have two units of measure (in addition to the standard base unit):

• Handling unit;
• Price unit.

Price Unit of Measure: Price Unit of Measure is the unit of measure in which the product is weighed and invoiced (in sales processes is the sales unit of measure and in purchase processes is the purchase unit of measure). Since this price unit is weight-related, it should always be expressed in pounds (imperial system) or kilograms or comparable units (metric system). There must always be set conversion from the standard base unit of measurement to the price unit. Therefore, it must be the same unit or a unit of measure based on weight (metric or imperial system).

Handling Unit of Measure: Handling Unit of Measure is the measurement unit used for sales and purchase transactions, including those that include picking, shipping, receiving, transferring, and selling. It might be any kind of unit that a company needs to carry out its operations (box, piece, crate, etc.). Catchweight items will have Sales Handling Unit of Measure and Purchase Handling Unit of Measure. The relation between the Handling Unit of Measure and the Base Unit of Measure is based on a normative weight.

This means that the standard unit of measure table will hold a fixed conversion between handling unit of measure and base unit of measure, but the allowable deviation in the conversion will be defined by a tolerance.
