Advanced Scenarios
This section describes advanced usage scenarios of Production Scenarios, focusing on how the app supports complex planning, dynamic production execution, and alternative manufacturing strategies.
These scenarios are especially relevant in environments where flexibility, optimization, and real-time decision-making are required.
Switching Production Methods Based on Availability
Scenario: A company produces the same item using different machines or processes depending on resource availability (e.g., machine downtime or capacity constraints).
How it works
- Define multiple Production Scenarios for the same Item, Variant, and Location, each with a different Process Type, BOM, or Routing.
- Set one scenario as Default for normal operations.
- During planning or production:
- Use the Change Process Type action to switch to an alternative scenario.
- The system automatically updates the BOM and Routing based on the selected process type.
Result
- Production can continue using an alternative method without changing item master data.
- Manufacturing becomes more resilient to disruptions.
Managing Seasonal or Time-Based Production Changes
Scenario: Different production processes are required depending on the period (e.g., seasonal production methods).
How it works
- Create multiple Production Scenarios for the same combination of Item, Variant, and Location
- Use different Starting Dates to define validity periods
When planning:
- The system validates the planning due date against the scenario’s starting date
- The appropriate scenario is applied automatically if set as default
Result
- Supports time-dependent production strategies
- Enables smooth transitions between production methods without manual reconfiguration
Using Family-Based Production for Related Items
Scenario: A company produces multiple related items together (e.g., cutting a raw material into different products) and wants to plan and execute production as a group.
How it works
- Define Process Types marked as Family
- Create Production Scenarios with:
- Family = Yes
- Assigned Family No.
During planning:
- Use Suggest Family Planning to:
- Group lines by family, location, and due date
- Calculate required quantities across all related items
During execution:
- Use Family Production Journal, which shows:
- All components and outputs for the entire production order
Result
- Ensures coordinated production of related items
- Optimizes material usage and reduces waste
Bulk Updating Process Types in Planning
Scenario: Production conditions change, and multiple planning lines must be updated to a new production method.
How it works
- Select multiple lines in:
- Planning Worksheet or Order Planning
- Use the Change Process Type action
The system:
- Validates that a Production Scenario exists for all items
- Updates:
- Process Type
- Production BOM
- Routing
- Prompts for component and routing refresh
Result
- Fast adjustment to planning strategy
- Ensures all dependent data stays consistent
- Improves coordination across planning and execution layers
