Troubleshooting & FAQs
This section helps identify and resolve the most common issues when working with Production Scenarios, and answers frequently asked questions related to planning, configuration, and production execution.
Common Issues and Solutions
1. Process Type is not automatically filled in planning
Issue: The Process Type field remains blank in Planning Worksheet or Order Planning lines.
Possible causes
- No default Production Scenario is defined for the Item + Variant + Location
- The scenario exists but is not valid for the planning date (Starting Date mismatch)
- The planning line does not correspond to a Production Order
Solution
- Ensure a Production Scenario exists and is marked as Default
- Verify that the Starting Date applies to the planning due date
- Confirm that the planning line is using Ref. Order Type = Production Order
2. Unable to select a Process Type
Issue: The Process Type field is empty or cannot be selected.
Possible causes
- No Production Scenario exists for the item context
- The selected Process Type is not valid for the combination (Item, Variant, Location, Date)
Solution
- Create or review Production Scenarios for the relevant item
- Ensure the scenario includes:
- Correct Item, Variant, Location
- Valid Starting Date
- Check that the Process Type is properly configured
3. Error when defining more than one default scenario
Issue: The system does not allow saving multiple default scenarios.
Cause: Only one default scenario is allowed per Item + Variant + Location
Solution
- Remove the Default flag from duplicate scenarios
- Keep only one scenario marked as default for the combination
4. Cannot change Process Type in Production Order
Issue: The Process Type cannot be changed in a Production Order.
Possible causes
- There are already posted entries (item, capacity, or warehouse)
- The selected Process Type is not valid for the order context
Solution
- Ensure no ledger entries are posted before changing the Process Type
- Verify that the scenario exists for the selected Process Type
- Confirm eligibility based on Source Type (Item, Family, Sales Header)
5. Family Production features not available
Issue: Family-based planning or journals are not available.
Possible causes
- Process Type is not marked as Family
- Production Scenario is not configured as a family scenario
- Production Order Source Type is not set to Family
Solution
- Ensure Process Type is configured with Family = Yes
- Define Family No. in the Production Scenario
- Use Production Orders with Source Type = Family
6. Suggest Family Planning does not generate results
Issue: The Suggest Family Planning action does not return any lines.
Possible causes
- No planning lines meet the criteria
- Lines are missing required values
Solution: Ensure planning lines meet all conditions:
- Family = Yes
- Action Message = New
- Valid Family No.
- Quantity greater than zero
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: What happens if no Production Scenario is defined?
If no Production Scenario exists or no default is defined:
- Planning and production follow standard Business Central behavior
- BOM and Routing are taken from Item Card or SKU configuration
Q: Can I have multiple Production Scenarios for the same item?
Yes. You can define multiple scenarios for the same item as long as:
- Each scenario has a different combination of:
- Process Type
- Location
- Variant
- Starting Date
Only one scenario can be set as Default per Item + Variant + Location
Q: When should I use the Default flag?
Use the Default flag when you want the scenario to be:
- Automatically applied during planning
- Used by the system without manual selection
If not defined, users must manually choose the Process Type during planning or production.
Q: Can I change the Process Type after planning?
Yes. You can change it:
- Directly on planning lines
- Using the Change Process Type action for multiple lines
The system will refresh BOM and Routing accordingly.
Q: Can I change the Process Type after execution starts?
No. Once ledger entries are posted, the Process Type can no longer be changed. This ensures data consistency and traceability.
Q: Do Production Scenarios replace standard Business Central logic?
No. Production Scenarios extend standard behavior:
- If a scenario is defined → it overrides BOM and Routing selection
- If no scenario exists → standard logic still applies
This ensures compatibility and flexibility.
