Locations
Overview
In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, the Location Card is extended by the License Plating application to allow you to control how each warehouse location interacts with License Plate tracking. You can determine which locations should require tracking by License Plating, and also configure options that dictate whether a License Plate can be partially consumed and which bin is used by default when assigning a new License Plate on a shipment.
Where to Configure
License Plate settings are available directly on the Location Card.
To access it: search for Locations, open the relevant location record, and navigate to the License Plating section (or Warehouse FastTab, depending on your page layout).
Setup Fields
To define License Plate information on a Location, fill in the following fields:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Require License Plate Tracking | Specifies whether License Plate tracking is required within this location. This setting can only be activated when Bin Mandatory is turned on, Directed Put-away and Pick is turned off, and the location is not configured as an In-Transit location. |
| Consumption Location | Specifies whether this location is used to consume production components. When enabled, a License Plate can be partially consumed (divided) at this location. This field is automatically cleared when Require License Plate Tracking is disabled. |
| Ship License Plate Bin Code | Specifies the bin used by default when assigning a new Ship License Plate number in a Warehouse Pick or Inventory Movement. |
Prerequisites for Enabling License Plate Tracking
The Require License Plate Tracking field can only be enabled on a location that meets all of the following conditions:
| Condition | Required Value |
|---|---|
| Bin Mandatory | Must be ON |
| Directed Put-away and Pick | Must be OFF |
| Use As In-Transit | Must be OFF |
If any of these conditions is not met, the field will be unavailable for editing on the Location Card.
Validation Rules and Error Messages
The following validation rules are enforced when modifying location settings. The system will block the change and display an error message in each case.
| Attempted Action | Condition That Blocks It | Error Message |
|---|---|---|
| Disable Require License Plate Tracking | The location bins contain existing inventory | “Require License Plate Tracking must be Yes, because the bins contain items." |
| Enable or Disable Require License Plate Tracking | Open item ledger entries exist for the location | “The field ‘Require License Plate Tracking’ cannot be changed, because one or more open item ledger entries exist." |
| Enable Require License Plate Tracking | Directed Put-away and Pick is ON | “The field ‘Require License Plate Tracking’ cannot be turned on for locations with the field ‘Directed Put-away and Pick’ turned on." |
| Enable Require License Plate Tracking | Use As In-Transit is ON | “The field ‘Require License Plate Tracking’ cannot be turned on for locations with the field ‘Use As In-Transit’ turned on." |
| Enable Require License Plate Tracking | Bin Mandatory is OFF | “The field ‘Require License Plate Tracking’ cannot be turned on for locations with field ‘Bin Mandatory’ turned off, because License Plate tracking only supports locations that work with bins." |
| Disable Bin Mandatory | Require License Plate Tracking is ON | “The field ‘Bin Mandatory’ cannot be turned off for locations with the field ‘Require License Plate Tracking’ turned on, because License Plate tracking only supports locations that work with bins." |
| Enable Directed Put-away and Pick | Require License Plate Tracking is ON | “The field ‘Directed Put-away and Pick’ cannot be turned on for locations with the field ‘Require License Plate Tracking’ turned on." |
| Enable Use As In-Transit | Require License Plate Tracking is ON | “The field ‘Use As In-Transit’ cannot be turned on for locations with the field ‘Require License Plate Tracking’ turned on." |
Automatic Behavior
When Require License Plate Tracking is disabled on a location, the Consumption Location field is automatically reset to No. This ensures that partial consumption behaviour is not left active on a location that no longer requires License Plate tracking.
Remarks
The following constraints apply when configuring locations for License Plating:
- A location tracked by License Plate cannot be an advanced warehouse (Directed Put-away and Pick enabled).
- It is mandatory to use bins when configuring a location tracked by License Plate.
- An In-Transit location cannot be set up as tracked by License Plate.
- When using partial License Plates on consumption movements (manufacturing module), the location must be set up as a Consumption Location.
- If a location does not require License Plate Tracking but the item is License Plate tracked, the system still requires a License Plate Number when creating inventory for that item. For such locations, a General License Plate Number will be automatically selected and used in transactions (see License Plating Setup).
