Permissions
To use this extension, all users need some extra permissions:
(BRIMES_READ)- Manufacturing Essentials - Read -Provides read-only access to all information within the Manufacturing Essentials extension.(BRIMES_BASIC)- Manufacturing Essentials - Basic - Allows users to post entries for Process Item Consumptions and internal movements for Process Items. Allows creation and assignment of Co/By Products to a main item or Production Order.
User Groups
Only users assigned to the Production Manager User Group can approve certain production order statuses (e.g., “In Review”). This user group is automatically created during installation and cannot be deleted.
Data Retention and Privacy
Data Storage
Manufacturing Essentials operates as an extension inside Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and relies on Business Central master/transaction data plus app-specific setup and feature data to enable its functionality (Co/By‑Products, Manufacturing Backflushing, Multiple Order Consumption, and Manufacturing Variances Management).
- All Manufacturing Essentials data is stored inside the customer’s Business Central tenant database (no separate MES database is used).
Privacy Compliance
Manufacturing Essentials is documented as a set of capabilities that extend Business Central manufacturing for process industries, meaning usage and data access occur within the Business Central environment and follow Business Central’s operational model.
- Access to feature behavior and the records it impacts is inherently role- and permission-driven within Business Central (e.g., who can change setup such as Backflushing Automatic Tracking).
- The app supports controlled operational behavior (e.g., automated lot assignment and consumption posting logic), and those actions are constrained by the scenarios supported/not supported in the documentation.
Data Archiving and Retention
- Manufacturing Essentials does not require a separate archiving mechanism to operate; its operational records remain available for monitoring and traceability within the standard Business Central data lifecycle.
- For ongoing retention and cleanup strategies, apply your organization’s standard Business Central governance practices for manufacturing data (production orders, item ledger entries, capacity/value entries, etc.), because Manufacturing Essentials operates by extending these processes and storing configuration/feature-specific records as part of the app.
Security Best Practices

Restrict configuration changes to a small group Settings like Backflushing Automatic Tracking change how consumption and tracking is automatically posted/assigned for released production orders. Limit access to Manufacturing Essentials Setup to responsible key users.

Validate “supported/not supported” scenarios before go-live For example, automatic lot/package assignment has documented limitations (e.g., not supported for process items, not supported with Advanced Warehouse directed put-away & pick, not supported when warehouse pick is mandatory). Ensure your security/role design doesn’t encourage users into unsupported flows.

Apply tighter control where bulk or automated postings occur Multiple Order Consumption supports automatic distribution/registration of process-item consumption and “as-of date” inventory calculations by lot/package/location/bin—these are powerful capabilities that should be limited to trained roles.

Use Assisted Setup for consistency across environments Manufacturing Essentials includes an Assisted Setup Wizard for initial configuration—use it to standardize setup in sandbox/UAT/production and reduce configuration drift.

Govern variance policy management carefully Variance Management introduces policy enforcement (Warning/Block) and quantitative review. Keep policy definition and changes restricted to finance/manufacturing controllers to avoid inconsistent production posting outcomes.
